Tom Kyte and Steven Feuerstein

Two of the worlds leading Oracle experts in downtown Cleveland Ohio.
Hear them discuss how to get the most out of your investment in the Oracle RDBMS technology.

Day 1 -- Tom Kyte

A day with Oracle's Ask Tom

On May 22nd, Oracles Ask Tom will present for the entire day on Oracle subjects near and dear to all of us who work with Oracle. The top 10... No wait... 11 new features of Oracle Database 11g

This session will focus on eleven new, high impact features of Oracle Database 11g and what they mean to you the developer or DBA. Continuing the format of the last four Oracle Open Worlds Oracle's AskTom will present these as a "top eleven" list, the eleven new features he believes will be the reason to look at Oracle Database 11g in the near future.

Read and write consistency

Oracle's multiversioning model is by far it's most striking core RDBMS feature. We'll explore this often misunderstood database feature, both from a "read" perspective as well as some nuances you probably are not aware of in a multi-user environment. This session is probably an eye-opening experience, even for people that have been using Oracle for many many years.

All about Flashing back

This session covers all of the flashback areas: flashback query, flashback table, flashback row history, flashback drop, and flashback database. Tom explains how each feature is physically implemented; for example, what settings like undo_retention and guaranteed undo retention mean and what they do. This session is very in depth (on the "how") so database administrators can be prepared to allow these features to be used in their database environments.

Advanced analytic functions

Analytic functions are the coolest thing to happen to the SQL language since the introduction of the keyword SELECT. This session explores the use cases for analytic functions, demonstrates how and where you should use them, and explains the (nontrivial) syntax behind them.

Database Worst Practices

A lot of time is spent by IT professionals studying best practices in the industry. This presentation turns that around and takes a look at some "worst practices," the top things you can do to ensure failure, delays, and poor performance in your database applications. Instead of focusing on things to do in your database applications, the presentation looks at things you should never do. The presentation uses actual customer experiences to investigate the top 10 things done wrong over and over again, and how to avoid making the same mistakes yourself.

Tom Kyte is a Senior Technical Architect in Oracle's Server Technology Division. Before starting at Oracle, Kyte worked as a systems integrator building large-scale, heterogeneous databases and applications, mostly for military and government customers. Kyte spends a great deal of time working with the Oracle database and, more specifically, working with people who are working with the Oracle database. In addition, Kyte is the Tom behind the AskTom column in Oracle Magazine, answering people's questions about the Oracle database and its tools http://asktom.oracle.com/. Kyte is also the author of Expert Oracle Database Architecture (Apress, 2005), Expert One on One Oracle(Wrox Press, 2001/Apress 2004), Beginning Oracle Programing (Wrox press, 2002/Apress 2004), and Effective Oracle by Design (Oracle Press, 2003). These are books about the general use of the database and how to develop successful Oracle applications.

Day 2 -- Steven Feuerstein

A day with PL/SQL Guru Steven Feuerstein

On May 23rd, Steven Feuerstein, the leading author and educator on all things PL/SQL will present a full day course titled "Practical Best PL/SQL Programming".

Steven Feuerstein is considered one of the world's leading experts on the Oracle PL/SQL language, having written ten books on PL/SQL all published by O'Reilly Media, including Oracle PL/SQL Programming and Oracle PL/SQL Best Practices (all from O'Reilly Media)

In this course, Steven will show you how to write code that is driven by best practices, the objective of which is to write programs that are easy to understand, maintain and enhance. From high-level principles to specific techniques, this course will give you the information you need to transform your PL/SQL programs into high quality code of which you can be proud.

After attending this course, you will be much better situated to take full advantage of PL/SQL and do so in a way that results in the best PL/SQL code you've ever written!. Steven has been developing software since 1980, spent five years with Oracle (1987-1992), and serves as a PL/SQL Evangelist to Quest Software.

You could spend thousands of dollars attending Oracle classes and still not learn the tips and tricks Tom and Steven will be discussing that make your database work for you. You could spend weeks combing through manuals and journals to try to come up to speed with these new features. Or, if you register by April 21st you can spend $270 (NEOOUG members $250) to have direct access to two leading authorities who will cut through the fluff and focus in on what is really going to make the difference in your day to day work

Seminar Registration

Seminar early registration costs $250 for NEOOUG members and $270 for non-members if you register by April 21st 2008. Regular registration fees are $300 for NEOOUG members and $320 for non-members. For the price of admission attendees will be receiving a copy of two books, Kytes Expert Oracle Architecture and Feuersteins Oracle PL/SQL Best Practices (list price $50 and $30) as well as lunch and snacks throughout the days.
