Why Use PL/SQL? Bryn Llewellyn, Distinguished Product Manager, Oracle Corporation Large software systems must be built from modules. A module hides its implementation behind an interface that exposes its functionality. This is computer science’s most famous principle. For applications that use an Oracle Database, the database is the persistence module. The tables and the SQL statements that manipulate them are the implementation details. The interface is expressed with PL/SQL. Developers and users of applications built this way are happy with their correctness, maintainability, security, and performance. But when developers follow the NoPlsql paradigm, their applications have problems in each of these areas and users suffer. This session provides PL/SQL devotees with unassailable arguments to defend their beliefs against attacks from skeptics. Skeptics who attend will see the light. Bryn has written a whitepaper that gives a careful and detailed account of what his presentation addresses. You can download it from the Oracle Database PL/SQL and EBR blog.

Sizing 101: Which Engineered System Is Right for Your Needs? Carlos Sierra, Accenture Enkitec Group Data Warehousing/BI / All Sizing a new hardware is more of a science than an art, but is it an exact science? Maybe not. When it comes to establishing the amount of computation requirements from a current set of databases, there are certainly a few 'unknowns' and a few 'assumptions'. This is where the sizing becomes a bit of an art... but still remains a science. This session is about explaining the foundations of a sizing exercise; using metadata from your current database instead of human guesstimates, which sometimes are quite far from reality. Carlos Sierra is a regular speaker at Oracle Users Groups on topics related to Performance and SQL Tuning. He is the author of some legacy tools like SQLTXPLAIN and SQLHC; and of some modern ones like eDB360 and eSP. Carlos has almost 20 years of experience in Oracle databases, and many more on legacy UNISYS and IBM mainframes. He currently works as a consultant for Accenture Enkitec Group, where he leads the Oracle database Health-Check team.

Edition-based Redefinition: the Key to Online Application Upgrade Bryn Llewellyn, Distinguished Product Manager, Oracle Corporation DBA / All Edition-based redefinition (EBR) was introduced by Oracle Database 11g Release 2 and is significantly improved in Oracle Database 12c. It enables you to patch and upgrade the user-created artifacts that implement the database backend of an application without interrupting the availability of the application. EBR brings these new object types: the edition, the editioning view, and the cross edition trigger. They jointly support the semantic effect of creating a full copy of your application backend, in the same database, maintaining bidirectional transactional data synchronization between the old and new versions. Existing sessions can continue to use the pre-upgrade application and, at the same time, new sessions can use the post-upgrade application. When no sessions are any longer using the pre-upgrade application, it can be retired.
Bryn Llewellyn has worked in the software field for more than 35 years. He joined Oracle UK in 1990 at the European Development Center to work on the Oracle Designer team, transferred to the Oracle Text team and then into consulting as the text specialist for Europe. He relocated to Redwood Shores in 1996 to join the Oracle Text Technical Marketing Group. He has been the product manager for PL/SQL since 2001. In 2005, he became responsible, additionally, for edition-based redefinition (EBR), the Oracle Database capability that supports online application upgrade.

The Hybrid World - RDBMS + Hadoop Kerry Osborne, Accenture Enkitec Group Professional Development / All The hybrid world is coming! There is no doubt that hadoop has established a foothold in traditional enterprises by now. On the other hand, the well-established RDBMS products are far from dead. One of the major problems with hadoop is that the native open source SQL engines are just not as capable as the traditional RDBMS engines. What that means is that moving an application to hadoop generally requires a major effort to re-write the data access layer (i.e., the SQL). Nevertheless, the power and the scalability of the distributed hadoop architecture are undeniable. So why not use the best of both worlds? The combination of the two, if done right, can create a platform that combines the best of both architectures. This presentation will discuss approaches for building just such a hybrid platform.
Kerry Osborne is an Oracle performance specialist and founder of Accenture Enkitec Group, an expert model Oracle-focused consulting company that was acquired by Accenture in 2014. Kerry has co-authored two Oracle books, Pro Oracle SQL (with Karen Morton) and Expert Oracle Exadata (with Tanel Poder). He is also a member of the OakTable Network and an Oracle ACE Director.
The Convergence of Data Governance and Cyber Threat Analytics Jeffrey Needham, FabrixAnalytix Other / All The emerging crisis in Cyber Security stems from an incomplete awareness of where and how sensitive data is spread across 100s of databases and 1000s of schemas. There will be a brief overview into a NIST working group proposal at how to collect, transport and analyze attack surfaces in an enterprise utilizing Dark Corridors and Fabrics for the invisbile transport and predictive modeling of existing and pending Threats. Jeffrey Needham has been working on at-scale computing problems for a while, starting with an 'orange-book' compiler for supercomputers. While working on the Oracle kernel - and the underlying kernels/hardware that came of age with Oracle - he acquired a sub-specialty in clustered filesystems, which continued while at Red Hat and Netapp, At Yahoo and Hortonworks, he developed his platform engineering skills, culminating as Hortonwork's Federal Field CTO with a specialty in Threat Analytics and down-range, situation-aware use cases. Jeffrey is the founder of Fabrix Analytix which specializes in unique Apache appliances for threat, governance and IoT.
